The Struggles After An Orthopedic Surgery

By Kelly Wood

Various medical surgeries are a common scenario everyday in the operating room to treat patients depending on their diagnoses. In fact, most operating procedures done are related to any MD orthopedic surgeries making their department highly needed. There are different cases that orthopedic surgeons face each day ranging from major bone operations to conservative measures.

Those that engage in any strenuous sport activity are at high risk to any sprains, dislocations and fractures. For the old age, unsteady gait and blurred vision are normal physiological changes that can be a threat for falls and accidents. Also, children are not exempted from acquiring any accidents given the fact that they are mostly active.

Having to undergo any type of operation, whether if major or minor, can have a different meaning on every individual. For some, it can be really traumatic and difficult but for others, it could be just the opposite. Indeed, every person has his own way of coping the situation and, it is mostly at this point that health care providers should determine their unique needs.

Most who have undergone surgeries share that the real challenge is not actually during the operation but it is after it. The moment that he wakes up after the surgery and becomes aware that something was done inside his body is devastating. What is even worse is realizing that he cannot immediately recover from an accidental fall or injury.

At the first days after the surgery, patients would really require to have a complete bed rest so that their body can recover. It is within this time that they need most supervision from their primary care givers or any family member together with the health team. In fact, assessing the psychological status through verbalization of feelings can be also therapeutic.

After surgery, complications can happen every now and then that may put the patient in a critical situation. Symptoms that may entail bleeding or further infection at the incision site are just some that should be looked out for. For this reason, the health care team regularly monitors the patient so that they could refer these manifestations to the attending doctor.

The most complications reported are signs of infection and wound rupture of the suture at the site of incision. Bacterial infections are caused by improper application and not regularly changing the dressing. Wound rupture may happen if the patient does not splint the chest during coughing that opens the suture lining and leads to bleeding.

Another thing that these types of patients faced is the fact they could stay in the hospital for a few days and at those times they remain dependent. Most likely, they can be discharged soon if their condition is better but even so, they need the supervision of their family. There are times that they could feel pain at the site of the wound whenever they move and it really is tough to move around.

It is important that health education on any MD orthopedic operation should be done for the patient and his family so that they could understand more of the situation. By providing knowledge, this can help better in the recovery process of the patient. Having a strong support from families and giving quality care from the health providers would sure result in a fast healing.
