By Marissa Velazquez

It is not a strange phenomenon that some people who were born male feel like they should be female while the others who were born female feel like they were meant to be males. This has brought about substantial debate on how to handle this class of people with regard to gender. With their ever-growing numbers, the society is compelled to accommodate them and provide to them the essential services too. This has even necessitated for the provision of transgender health services. Here are some therapeutic measures employed to attain the desired body for a male transforming to a woman.

Males are different from females physiologically, psychologically and emotionally because they were created to perform different roles. A man seeking to transform into a woman therefore has to undergo hormonal replacements. An expert should handle this exercise failure to which will lead to adverse effects on the patient body. The purpose for replacing these hormones is to change the secondary sexual characteristics of an individual.

Testosterone and estrogen are hormones that men and women have in their bodies in different quantities. Men are known to have a higher level of testosterone to women while women too have a higher level of estrogen to their male counterparts. Therefore, one of the objectives of this treatment is to increase the level of estrogen to bring the levels to that of an individual born as a woman. This is an important hormone in women since it is responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle. It is also known to have a relationship with moods and libido.

Progesterone is another important hormone. This is an important substance in a woman responsible for the skin texture and also affects the urge of sex. This should be given to transwomen to enable them develop breasts. Such development will take care of the mammary glands and the alveoli just to name a few. Other than the surgical procedures, this method has proved an effective option.

To be able to deal with the hormone testosterone, anti-androgens are introduced. This is important to suppress the testosterone especially before the client can go for a surgery for sexual reassignment and still has his testicles. The introduced anti- androgen does not stop the production of the unwanted hormone, but it is rendered weak to enable the estrogen to bind with the androgen receptors in its place.

It will be unfair not to state that hormone replacement therapy can not alter the effects of puberty. An example is the location of body hair, which in most cases is handled by laser removal. The hair will take some time to eliminate depending on the drop of testosterone in the body. The bone size and length is also dictated by the gender at puberty that might not be reversed.

Many people are usually taken through this therapy, however to completely alter the sexual orientation a surgical process is mandatory. This is usually done to replace the sexual organ with that of the desired gender. The sensitivity of the procedure calls for experience of the medical practitioner to ensure the functioning of the organs.

You will agree that we cannot segregate this people since they are in our midst as family members and friends therefore we should be accommodative and provide good transgender health care to them. Stigmatization may push them to the edge leaving them with no option other than seeking health care from non professionals thus risking their lives. They can also explore herbal options to fulfill their dreams.
