By Cecile Ingram

San Diego chiropractors manipulate the spine using their hands and other forms of treatment. They use the theory that through proper alignment of musculoskeletal structures of the body, more so the spine, the body is able to heal itself without requiring surgery or any forms of medication. Manipulation is used for restoration of ability of joints to move when their mobility is restricted by tissue injury. Such injuries may be caused by traumatic events like falling or repetitive stress.

Chiropractic is used primarily as one of the best alternatives to relieve pain in bones, joints, connective tissues and muscles. Cartilage, tendons and ligaments are examples of connective tissues. There are instances when chiropractors combine their treatment with other forms of conventional treatment. Identified by the initials DC, a chiropractor has to first complete an undergraduate course and graduate. They then spend another four years in chiropractic college.

The majority of chiropractors also undergo additional training in physical rehabilitation and specific exercise therapy. After graduating from college, they need to obtain licenses before they can practice. The process of obtaining a license involves sitting an exam and passing.

The treatment process involves adjusting bones and joints in the spine. This is possible through movements such as pulling, twisting and pushing. For purposes of relaxing muscles before doing spinal adjustment, some chiropractors use heat, electrical stimulation or ultrasound.

Adjustment of the spine is achieved through various methods. For instance, there is the use of fingers and hands for application of pressure for movement of the vertebrae slightly beyond their normal range of motion. One can also be treated using careful twisting of the head, hips and shoulders. Other options of treatment include the use of ice, corsets or braces, conditioning exercises, relaxation therapy and biofeedback. There are also those that use x-rays for purposes of diagnosis.

Whereas chiropractic treatment is safe, there are a few side effects that one is set to experience. The chiropractor needs to be asked about the risks in advance before treatment begins. Such effects include discomfort after adjustment, headaches and fatigue among others. Fortunately, the effects are only experienced for just one day. These should be shared with the chiropractor whenever they are experienced and when they last for long.

For persons that have never experienced chiropractic care, it would not be strange to get worried the first time they go for treatment. For those that seek to relieve low back pain, the treatment is safe, simple and painless. During the first visit, the medical history of the patient will be needed. The doctor will ask several questions to obtain this. Among other things, they will want to know if the patient has ever had migraines, plus seeking to know their general diet.
